Oscar de la Renta: R.I.P.

Besides being a superb fashion designer throughout the last half of the 20th century and up to his death in October 2014, Oscar de la Renta designed  highly luxurious, entrance-making and eye-grabbing fashion jewelry. This master of fashion also excelled at dreaming up irresistible bijoux that complemented his haute luxe looks.

Consider the challenges involved in designing approximately 250 individual jewels for a single season’s runway show, in addition to all of the clothing…

Now consider that Oscar, season after season, did this for decades. Wow, right?

Since Oscar had a powerful creative vision, it’s hardly surprising that he designed much of his house’s jewelry himself. What is surprising, however, is that almost the entire Oscar de la Renta jewelry-making process, from sketch to runway, occurs in New York.

Except for one tasseled earring hand beaded in India, all the fashion jewelry is made in the U.S. Another reason to love the jewels.

It’s worth noting that Oscar also occasionally hired gifted designers to dream up bijoux to complement his extravagantly beautiful clothing. In 2007, Oscar hired Loulou de la Falaise to design what he called a “luxurious gypsy” fine jewelry collection, comprised of colorful semi-precious stones and fabricated in India. Loulou’s fine jewelry line was then followed by a costume jewelry collection for de la Renta that accessorized his designs.
